Surf Fishing Lures

Surf fishing lures can be broadly categorized into hard baits like plugs and soft baits like soft plastics. Within these categories, there are various subtypes, each designed for specific fishing conditions and target species.

All lures are meant to attract fish by imitating food sources, which is how you get a fish to bite onto the lure or bait and be snagged by a hook. Artificial lures attract fish by looking similar to or moving like food sources that fish would find in nature, though in some conditions fish will gulp just about anything!

 Hard Baits:

  • Plugs/Crankbaits: These are hard-bodied lures with a lip or bill that causes them to dive and wobble, imitating baitfish. They can be shallow-running or deep-diving, depending on the lure's design.

  • Twitch Baits: Designed to be retrieved with a twitchy, stop-and-go action, these lures imitate wounded baitfish and are effective in shallow water.

  • Spoons: These are flat, blade-shaped lures that can be retrieved at various speeds, and they can be effective in different water depths.

  • Jigs: These are lead-headed lures, often rigged with soft plastics or swimbaits, and can be versatile for various fishing techniques.

Soft Plastics: These lures come in various shapes and sizes, imitating different types of baitfish, and can be rigged on jigheads, drop-shot rigs, or with Carolina rigs.

Additional Considerations:

  • Colors: Lure colors can be important, with white being a good general-purpose choice for surf fishing due to its resemblance to the bellies of baitfish.

  • Weight: Lure weight can affect how far you can cast and how deep you can fish.

  • Specific Species: Different species may prefer specific types of lures or colors. For example, some lures are specifically designed for striped bass or halibut.
